What does it mean to be confident?

Confidence is the organic outcome of truly loving yourself and living an authentic life. My confidence is the result of both success and failure. I recognize that I am imperfect and I can laugh at myself, but it’s not enough to recognize that we are imperfect, it’s important for me to strive to be a better human in all aspects of my life.

What comes to mind when you think of the word “joy”?

I think of a state of mind where you are aware of the negative aspects of life, but you choose to focus on the positive. Joy is deeper than happiness – it’s ubiquitous and enduring.

Can you identify the time in your life when you began to totally accept yourself and all of your flaws?

Well – I’m not there yet! I love myself completely but I continue to work on total acceptance.

What do you admire most about yourself?

There are two very unique characteristics that I like about myself: 1. My sense of humor! I think I am very funny even when no else does. I like that I can make myself laugh. 2.My commitment and concern for social justice issues. I am an advocate for marginalized populations and my spirit is fed when I am working on social justice projects be it through teaching, research or direct service.

Fill in the blank: I am….a purposed human being who is working every day to be a better wife, mother, advocate, environmentalist, and academic.

How has your faith contributed to who you are today?

My faith has allowed me to have a personal relationship with my Creator. From this relationship I have learned the importance of discerning what is for me and what is not.

What would you tell your younger self or someone who has yet to discover her worth?

I would tell me “Do not waist your time in relationships that do not bring you joy”

If you could identify a celebrity who you believe exemplifies a Chosen Covergirl, who would that be and why?

Michelle Obama is EVERYTHING!!! I look up to her on so many levels. She, like myself, is raising two Black girls and I see her as a mentor and guide. She exemplifies the epitome of the educated, fun, happy, beautiful and balanced woman.
